Current picture
HRM records intimidation and dispersal of Pesta Babi screenings during its second-quarter monitoring. The documentary was released online on 22 May.
Which screening incidents are documented, and what remedies were available to organizers?
Background
Civic space concerns the practical ability to report, organise, discuss and make cultural work. The August 2019 anti-racism protests and internet shutdown are major reference points. The Jakarta administrative court later found the shutdown unlawful, but that ruling did not establish that every subsequent restriction ended.
Recent cases include journalism, student organising and public film screenings. Each needs its own date, authority and evidence. Pesta Babi links debate about South Papua’s land projects with the ability to show and discuss a documentary; monitoring reports of intimidation and dispersal should remain attributed. Disagreement with a work and an action preventing people from seeing it are different things.
