Current picture
Greenpeace reports that PTUN Jakarta upheld public access to the four permit-revocation decisions and implementation records on 14 September 2026. The dispute now includes whether the announced revocations can be checked through official documents; disclosure and ecological recovery remain separate questions.
Have the revocation decisions and implementation records been released?
Background
Mining in Raja Ampat involves particular islands, permits, companies and customary territories. Tourism and marine conservation make the region internationally visible, but the effects of extraction also concern forest, freshwater and local livelihoods on the islands themselves.
On 10 June 2025 the government announced four permit revocations, while distinguishing PT Gag Nikel, whose permit remained. This was not an announcement that all mining had ended. Following the decision requires evidence of operations, compliance and site recovery, as well as community accounts. An island-specific observation should not be presented as a measurement for the whole archipelago.

A September report citing the energy ministry dates Gag Nikel’s resumption to 3 September after a temporary suspension. The government promised stricter monitoring and rehabilitation. Gag’s operation is separate from the four companies whose permits were revoked in June.
