Current picture
The IAL cassation was rejected with a dissenting opinion. Other company cases and customary-land claims must be followed separately.
What is the present status of each permission, court proceeding and affected customary territory?
Background
Awyu communities in Boven Digoel have challenged plantation permissions affecting customary forests. Hendrikus Woro’s case concerns PT Indo Asiana Lestari’s environmental approval. Proceedings involving PT Kartika Cipta Pratama and PT Megakarya Jaya Raya are separate and should not be merged into one court outcome.
The Supreme Court rejected the IAL cassation in a decision made on 18 September 2024, with a dissenting judge; the coalition discussed the accessible ruling on 1 November. A judgment on that permission does not determine every customary-land claim or establish what has been cleared. The continuing questions concern consent, legal recognition, forest access and the actual effects of each company’s activities.

IAL receives preliminary location permit
Greenpeace’s account dates PT Indo Asiana Lestari’s preliminary location permit to 2017. The proposed plantation covered Woro clan land near Yare, Fofi, in Boven Digoel. The later lawsuit challenged environmental approval and the lack of information and consultation described by customary owners.

Hendrikus Woro files environmental lawsuit
Awyu land defender Hendrikus (Franky) Woro filed a lawsuit against PT Indo Asiana Lestari’s environmental approval. Greenpeace’s account describes customary forest as the source of food, work and inherited social responsibilities, and records objections to a decision communities said they had not agreed to.

Greenpeace Southeast AsiaJayapura court rejects lawsuit
The Jayapura administrative court rejected Woro’s environmental lawsuit. Greenpeace described the ruling as a setback and recorded his intention to continue the legal challenge. This first-instance decision precedes the 2024 cassation outcome; the IAL case should be distinguished from other Awyu-related company cases.
