Current picture
PTFI’s April 2026 account commemorates seven workers killed in the September 2025 Grasberg Block Cave incident and two killed in separate shootings in February and March 2026. The company reports mine recovery and production at 40–50%. Its year-end production target is a stated plan, alongside questions about worker safety, security and community impacts.
What independent findings establish the causes, safeguards and progress of mine recovery?
Background
Freeport’s first Indonesian contract was signed in 1967, before Pepera. Mining development connected the highlands with lowland processing, settlements and transport infrastructure. Amungme relationships with highland land and Kamoro relationships with rivers and coastal livelihoods give this history its local context.
Ownership, revenue and jobs answer only part of the question. Land access, compensation, tailings and the river–coast system require community accounts and environmental evidence alongside company reports. The 2018 change in ownership did not itself establish that these concerns were resolved. Watch follows specific agreements and reported effects rather than treating every Mimika story as a mining development.

Grasberg deposit identified
The company’s history records discovery of the Grasberg deposit in 1988 and expansion of operations afterwards. This marks the shift from the original Ertsberg project to the much larger copper and gold operation followed today.

Second contract of work
PTFI entered a new 30-year contract with provisions for two ten-year extensions. It established the next contractual stage of mining development; questions about customary land, livelihoods and environmental effects require sources beyond the corporate contractual record.

Majority Indonesian ownership
PTFI records completion of the transaction giving Indonesia a 51.2% majority stake. Ownership changes do not by themselves settle customary-land or environmental questions.
